Counting my blessings

I am incredibly blessed.  I wake up every morning and try to remember that.  I have friends and family that love me and people who, if I called them, would show up anytime anywhere.  I have a faith community that lets me be a small part of the journey of young adults as they discover the Catholic faith and their place in it, as well as God's plans for them.  I have a roof over my head, food to eat, all the necessaries.

People who know some of the challenges God has thrown at me always ask me why I always seem happy.  My answer is that I know that the hard times and challenges just remind me more to count the blessings that I do have.  I have a love and respect for the Blessed Mother that comes from losing my first born son.  I know how precious life is.  I know that if we do not treasure the children that God blesses us with then we are fools.  My two daughters are the reason that I will never lose my faith.  And they show me how to remember their "angel brother" just like he is right here with us.  Georgia, as she was getting ready to go to sleep one night said "Mommy, I was thinking... the wings that Joey wears are just part of a costume, they aren't real.  But he loves us."

Ceci showed how we have taken what many people would dwell on and try to hide from and made it just part of our family.  When Nevada Reading Week rolled around my husband and I went to read to her class.  They had a substitute for the day and she was new to their school.  I volunteer in the school and most of Ceci's classmates already knew me pretty well.  The teacher asked Ceci to introduce her parents and one of the kids shouted out "That's Mrs. S, we know her."  The substitute moved on and asked Ceci if she had any brothers or sisters.  Ceci, without pause replied "I have a big brother angel and a little sister."  The substitute hadn't really been listening and followed up with "Do they go to school here?"  Ceci didn't bat an eyelash "My brother is in Heaven.  My sister is in kindergarten."  Poor sub, she did not know what to say.  We assured her that it was fine and went on with our reading.

See?  Blessings everywhere.  You just have to decide to see them.  When life keeps kicking you... and believe me that I have the scars to show where I have been kicked... just think how lucky and blessed you are.  If you can't think of at least a dozen off the top of your head... start with this, you live somewhere that you have access to not only electricity (and probably running water with indoor plumbing) you have access to a computer and the ability to dig yourself out of whatever hole you are in... you just have to start.

a beginning

I live my life wearing several hats.  First and foremost, I am a God-loving Catholic wife and mother.  This path is not always easy, often not popular and always filled with blessings and challenges.
Every day I strive to live my faith in everything that I do, from the way that I treat my husband and children to the way that I treat rude people in traffic.  Somedays the people in traffic are easier to forgive and be kind to than my own family, but I think that is true for a lot of people.
I am starting this blog as a companion on a journey that I am trying to figure out as I go along.  I may get lost, I may screw up, heck, every great once in a while I use four letter words other than dang.  But this is my place to check up, re-evaluate and revise as necessary, or plow on ahead whatever the road may hold.

The story for the day is this... a woman who never dreamed that she would be a wife and mother has found that she is both.  The man that she fell in love with and pledged her life to bears little resemblance to the man that she still kisses good night and pledges her love to everyday.  Their road together has been rough.  They have suffered loss.  They have been through good times and bad, sickness and health, richer and poorer.  And though there is still endless love, sometimes she does not like the man she sees beside her, most often because he is too busy running her down and taking her for granted.

She is searching for the man that she fell in love with and loves still, she doubts that he still loves her, but feels bound.  I am praying for this couple that they open their hearts to hear Christ remind them of all that is good in their lives.  I am praying for them to remember the roles given to them by God.

"However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. " Ephesians 5:33
